Who is "Spiritual Entertainer"!?
About the writer behind "The Art of Doing Nothing and The Divine Truth" publication.
Hello everyone, I'm hoping you're all doing great whenever you are, and welcome to all our new subscribers, it's a great pleasure having you guys on board.
I launched my substack newletter a few months ago and I've sent out a couple of articles since then, but one thing that I've not yet done is tell my story. I've not told my readers who I am and I believe to build trust, a better community and a good reader-writer relationship it's important my readers get to know who's behind the articles and essays they get to read.
Who am I? Most times when we're asked who we are most of us think about our name, gender, our race, age, our careers, our geographical locations, our families and so on, but that question is also very spiritually and philosophically profound and deep; there's the us that we think we are and who the society sees when they look at us and that is the image we hold about ourselves but in actuality who we are is unfathomable, a blind-spot in the mindst of existence, an organism happening in nature of itself and words are just so limited in saying who and what we are. Who we are in a society is nothing but a role we play and most times we are not alive to the deeper meaning of who and what we are.
Who is Spiritual Entertainer, my name is Joshua Mukaria, I'm 27 years old and I'm from a geographical location called Kenya. I chose to use the pseudo name “Spiritual Entertainer” because I wanted to communicate spiritual and philosophical thoughts from different cultures and schools of thought in a non-partisan manner and in a sincere but not so serious manner too.
After high-school I joined campus and took up an undergraduate course in mathematical science but I soon realized it wasn't in alignment with what I wanted and temporarily dropped-out and later after soul searching I decided to take civil engineering as a part-time student which I'm now in my final year.
I'm interested in Civil engineering and building construction but over the years I've been studying about spirituality, philosophy and religion extensively more than even my career course. This has been out of a burning desire to understand philosophy, spirituality and religion from different cultures and schools of thoughts in a deeper manner and in the spirit of, “You don't understand the basic assumptions of your own culture if your culture is the only culture you know.”
I was born and raised in a Christian family and I remember growing up while in primary school/grade school I used to ask myself alot of questions about who God was, who created God and where he was. This kind of question are rarely acceptable in a church set-up and mostly viewed as sin and people rarely ask the clergy this kind of questions.
In high-school I had an experience that at that times didn't really know what it was; We were on holiday and I had just finished my daily chores, that is helping with feeding the livestock and as I was looking at myself on the mirror while grooming myself after taking a shower, and suddenly a very deep question arose in my mind, ‘Who Am I?’ I stood there looking directly into my eyes and lost for a couple of minutes trying to figure out what I was because I could clearly see I was not my name. I never told or talked about this with anyone because I thought it would really sound very absurd and probably be labled mad.
This happened a few other times afterwards but overtime I forgot about it and didn't inquire more because I thought that inquiry was a bit absurd too and at that time I didn't have access to the internet to maybe inquire more. Years later looking back I realised that this was indeed a moment of an epiphany.

I was a devoted Christian from childhood and used to read the bible and do fasting and prayer throughout my childhood but as I grew up my questions about the nature of God became more burning and deep and slowly I became an atheist because I couldn't really find the answers I was seeking. Becoming an atheist didn't solve the “God problem” and I continued with inquiring more about existence and then I met a friend who introduced me to Sadhguru the Indian mystic and I would say from this moment the boat of sailing towards a rabbit hole on spirituality, religion and philosophy officially sailed.
I discovered other, I would say credible sources to enrich my knowledge along the way from the likes of Jidu Krishnamurti, Osho, Ramakrishna, Ramana maharshi, Lao Tzu, Bodhidharma, Dogen, Terence Mckenna just to name a few, but it's after discovering Allan Watts the British born “Philosophical Entertainer” I would say I was now home! Living in the “eternal now.”
I've found Oriental philosophy that is the Eastern school of thought to be very profound in helping individuals understand themselves from within and go through this journey from the maternity ward to the crematorium in a more profound and alive manner and in the spirit of “life is not a problem to be solved but a reality to be lived.” This doesn't mean it's best school of thought but for someone who's been raised in the western philosophical and abrahamic religions school of thought learning new schools of thoughts and cultures across the world has enriched my way of viewing existence and hence not only understanding but feeling my basic inseparability from the whole that we call the universe.
It is from this perspective that I felt a burning desire to share what I've learnt along the way to maybe shorten the learning curve for those who might be interested in what I have to share. I imagined if those people who I've learnt from didn't share what they knew then probably it would have taken me a lifetime to learn by myself or never even get that knowledge, and so I felt compelled to share what I know in the best way I know.
I have never met a man so ignorant that I could not learn anything from him~Galileo Galilei. I believe that everyone has something they know that someone else doesn't know and sharing helps shorten others learning curve or time spent on learning by themselves.
Side note: I've not being able to send out my weekly newletter for probably a month or so; I've not been in the right flame of mind to do so due to other commitments, sorry for that, in future I'll make sure to communicate earlier. Looking forward to my writing being a sustainable means of a livelihood to be able to write full-time.
